In saline depression wetland systems where water has been drained or altered, the original hydrology of the system must be restored. If hydrology is restored, re-growth and re-colonization from dormant rhizomatous root systems of common emergent species can occur during periods of flooding.

Saline lakes with high concentrations of salt have simple communities. Great Salt Lake in Utah, for example, supports planktonic diatoms and other algae, brine flies and brine shrimp. Its salinity ranges from 50 to ppt depending on the volume of water present at any given time.
